- UMINEKO WHEN THEY CRY QUESTION UPDATE BACKGROUNDS SERIES
By the end of Episode 1, the cliches have ended, and the storyline becomes something like you've never seen before. The game is divided into 4 parts, each separate but connected, all part of an overarching storyline. A raging typhoon cuts off the island from the mainland, phones stop working and 18 people are completely isolated in a foreboding mansion on a solitary rock in the middle of the ocean.Īt first this may sound cliche, but Umineko takes a fairly standard storyline and drives it off a cliff in a shiny new sports car. Everyone is in a dire financial situation and in a dire need for money, thus a perfect motive for murder. Discuss is a bit of a tame word here as they are basically squabbling like vultures over the smallest pieces of Ushiromiya legacy. The aged head of Ushiromiya family, Kinzo, has been given three months to live until being invited to the great beyond and his children and grandchildren arrive to the secluded island of Rokkenjima to discuss the inheritance matters. Story is the most important part of an Visual Novel and this is where Umineko runs into some problems.

There's also a patch available online that will switch the original art to the PS3 art for those who can't get used to the original art or for those who want to play the game again with "better" artwork. Give it 2 episodes, tops, to get to love Battler's manly tears expression and Beatrice's troll face.

Give it maybe half an episode to get used to the ranges of expression and you'll find the designs growing on you more and more. The weird thing is that this character art style fits this kind of story well. The facial expressions of the characters are very well-done and express a wide variety of emotions, but it's too bad 07th Expansion didn't quite master the art of "fingers". Umineko fails in this category, by both Visual Novel and general gaming standards. Visual Novels are typically known to have many different drawings and artwork to enhance the experience. Here's the main concern with Umineko: the graphics. You'll be looking at a 30-40 hour experience depending on how fast/slow you read. Umineko is a pretty lengthy game and adding in gameplay would hinder the story. Umineko has even less than that the game reads like a book, with no choices, no branching routes, no real player input whatsoever except for hitting a button (mouse, spacebar, the "enter" key, whatever) to advance the text. Most only give the player/reader a choice every now and then. Visual Novels don't have much gameplay in the first place.

Strictly speaking, they're kinetic novels, or sound novels in this case, where the emphasis is on creating atmosphere through the soundtrack and sound effects. 1-4 and 5-8, I'll be sticking to 1-4 for this review. Since the episodes are now grouped into two games.
